Content of the Class

A lecture and laboratory study of the structure and function of human cells, tissues, organs and body systems, designed for BCON nursing program students. The lecture portion of the course will emphasize the functions of and interactions amongst components of each level of organization in normal and diseased states. Laboratory sessions will concentrate on anatomical terminology, the histology and gross anatomy of tissues, organs and organ systems, including human cadaver dissection, and some measurement of physiological variables in human subjects across these systems.

A key to understanding human anatomy is learning to see the relationships between structures. Instead of using PowerPoint, Dr. Anderson uses the white boards to draw pictures of bones and body structures along with the students. Once a week, the students engage with each other, setting up mock slide quizzes which facilitates learning histology. Twice a week, students work together in lab to identify structures on bones, skeleton models, and body donors.

TECHNOLOGY

Mobile Whiteboards, Tablets

Human Anatomy focuses on hands-on learning mainly through the use of mobile whiteboards. Students draw different muscles and bones to review for their examinations. They also use interactive human anatomy programs designed for their tablets.

As Extra Credit, the students in Dr. Anderson’s Human Anatomy class created a face diagram with pictures of them using each muscle that they learned about in the face.
