Dr. Deborah Anderson's Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy
Content of the Class
A lecture and laboratory study of the structure and function of human cells, tissues, organs and body systems, designed for BCON nursing program students. The lecture portion of the course will emphasize the functions of and interactions amongst components of each level of organization in normal and diseased states. Laboratory sessions will concentrate on anatomical terminology, the histology and gross anatomy of tissues, organs and organ systems, including human cadaver dissection, and some measurement of physiological variables in human subjects across these systems.
ENGAGEMENT
Student Teams
On the first day of class, students form teams to work collaboratively. Collaboration is part of problem solving during lecture, essential to learning anatomy in the lab, and key to constructing knowledge assignments completed outside of class. Students learn as they help each other answer discussion questions and clarify the material.
TECHNOLOGY
Online Textbook and Lab Videos
To emphasize depth of knowledge, students created interactive “lessons” for the online CVA textbook. Currently, there is no open source textbook for CVA. So, Dr. Anderson’s classes are writing one as they learn. The best way to learn is to teach. For each lab, every student pair makes a 1-2 minute video (using their phones) describing the regional anatomy of a particular organism. These videos are posted to the course LMS and used by other students in the class to study for lab practicals.
